Stoke Con Trent, October 2021, Review

After months (or years) of waiting, Stoke Con Trent 2021 finally happened!  So, how was it?

I'm pleased to say that the buzz of attending a comic convention hasn't been dissipated by the gap.  I was uncertain about how I'd feel, but that doubt didn't last long.  We pulled onto the car park and saw Boba Fett, a DeLorean, and the Jurassic Park jeep.  Yes, this was a convention and it had the attractions to prove it; it was fantastic.

This Con was the first I've attended that wasn't at Staffordshire University (I missed the one in King's Hall Stoke) and I have mixed feelings about the relocation.  Previous cons have enjoyed the wide open spaces around the Staffs Uni campus.  In particular, the last Con made use of Staffs Uni's Sports Hall which was excellent - large and bright (great for looking at merchandise and for getting photos of ... well, everything) and carpeted (the acoustics were brilliant - it was possible to hold conversations without sound bouncing off every hard surface in the room).  Yes, sports halls (especially carpeted) are significantly better than night-club type venues for conventions.  Staffs also has the London Road Venue and Brindley building, which are both good for Cons (the LRV with its stage, the Brindley building providing additional space).

I mentioned the outdoor attractions; let's start with them:
The Fall Guy Truck (that was a novelty)
Transformers Grimlock car (also unusual, and a change from Bumblebee, who I've seen elsewhere)
An American police car (I don't know if it was from a specific show, but the lights and sound were awesome)
    An American muscle car
The Jurassic Park Jeep (with scenery)
    Lightning McQueen
Back to the Future DeLorean (first time I've seen this at a Con)

...which were all excellent.  It was great to see something different and familiar, and the organisers had done well to choose a variety of vehicles to appeal to all age ranges; I've mentioned this before, and it's something they did well here.

There was a very good mix of professional and amateur cosplay, with the East Midlands Garrison providing a small but varied troop of characters, and a wide range of other characters (some I recognised, some I didn't) which meant that there was a photo opportunity round every corner.  The Staffordshire Tardis was open for photos, and it was good to see it again (and with all the cosplay Doctors taking a moment for a quick photo).

The Cosplay competition was well attended, with prizes offered by the Convention's sponsors, and the Cosplay community did a great job of bringing the convention to life, and adding to the experience.  They were also fantastic at providing entertainment outdoors, for those who are still a little edgy about being inside with crowds of people (there wasn't very much social distancing going on, but masks and sanitiser were available to all attendees).

The headline attractions at Conventions are the celebrities (I probably should have started with them).  Unfortunately for Stoke Con Trent, a number of celebrities that were booked to appear had to cancel for various unrelated reasons.  The remaining celebs were - again - a good range and appealed to a very wide audience.  Will Mellor (Hollyoaks, among others) made an appearance and was very chatty throughout.

Star Wars fans saw Mike Quinn (Nien Nunb), Tim Rose (Admiral Ackbar) and Ross Sambridge (body double for Supreme Leader Snoke).  It was a slightly comical moment when we met them, as we saw the large and small of Star Wars - Mike Quinn is about 5'3" tall (my guess), while Ross Sambridge is 7' tall (according to Google).  We didn't see Matt Tyler, but such are the vagaries of Conventions.

The Gladiators were again due to attend - not in the numbers they have before, but even so I was particularly looking forward to seeing Jet again.  In the end, I think I either took a wrong turning, missed her completely or she didn't turn up.  The one minor disappointment I have from the day is not meeting any of the Gladiators, who are always a great crowd-pleaser at conventions.  There were other celebrities too, all ready to sign pictures, have photos and so on, but none that my children were interested in.  It turned out that they were far more interested in the traders' tables.
I attended the convention with two of my three children, and they both enjoyed it.  We particularly liked the range of stalls, and the good supply of Funko Pops (there were bargains to be had on the day, that's for sure).

The kids had photos with the Star Wars characters, liked watching the Cosplay Parade, and came back with some new Funko Pops.  Keele has the advantage of a Co-op literally next door to the Students' Union, which was great for unplanned snacks, and the size of the Keele Campus meant that we had no trouble finding somewhere quiet and indoors to sit and have a quick food break.

The event was extremely well organised, with stewards and security on the doo.  The layout was shared on social media in advance, and there weren’t many signposts around between the different rooms and locations in the venue, but the enthusiastic photographer was frequently circling and leading people to the various parts of the convention.  It’s all small steps back to normality, and it’s all good.

It would be untrue to say that this was as big as the pre-pandemic Cons, but it would also be unfair to criticise.  I am certain that the next Stoke Con Trent (and if they keep to the usual two-per-year schedule, then we're looking at the next one in April 2022) will be as big as the previous ones, as guests; features; stall-holders and exhibitors will all be back to their normal capacity and Covid will be a thing of the past.  This was a significant step on the road back to normality, and I am most certainly looking forward to the next one already, anticipating a return to greatness (and a move back to Staffs Uni, please!).

*I was granted a press pass to cover the Con, share previews, a review and photos, and to Tweet throughout the day.  I paid for my children's tickets.

What's on this weekend? 2-3 October 2021

I'm really pleased to see more and more events coming up in the future, as event organisers are able to make plans following the easing of Covid restrictions earlier this year.

What's on for this weekend?

Firstly - Northwich Comic Con market.  Not the full indoor convention that they've held in the past (it's too soon to get everybody and everything organised), but an outdoor market of all things geek, nerd and sci-fi.  There's likely to be a good contingent of cosplayers there too, making it worth the trip up the M6.

My review of a previous Northwich Comic Con.

Official Facebook page for Northwich Comic Con.

Next up, and a little closer to home, there's Apedale Valley Light Railway's Steam Gala weekend - on both Saturday and Sunday.  This is their sixth Steam Gala weekend, so they are a well-oiled operation.  There's plenty to see and do indoors and outdoors (there's a steam shed converted into a museum, as well as all the train activity on the tracks) and if the weather holds this will be a particularly good event.

They aim to have six steam locomotives running during the weekend; four of their own, and two visitors.  As ever, with machines of this age, there's the possibility of last-minute mechanical hitches causing changes – we are dealing with 100 year old machines, and they can be grumpy.  The loco shed will be open for visits, and the WW1 Trench will be operating.

Admission is £5 adults, £2.50 children, £12 family (2+2) and the admission ticket includes the first train rides – further rides can be purchased at our normal fares (adults £3.50, children £1.50). Trains will run from 1100 to 4:30 on both days.

Apedale Valley is near Newcastle; not easy to find but enter ST5 7LB in your satnav, and follow the signs.

And finally (for now), Crewe Heritage Centre, also known as Crewe Railway Museum, are holding their first toy and train collectors' fair on Saturday 2 October, 10-3.

More details: Crewe Heritage Centre website.

What's on this weekend? 25-26 September

Here's a quick rundown of what's on this weekend in Stoke-on-Trent, Newcastle and the surrounding area, selected to be suitable for the Days Out With Daddy audience - families with young children.

Middleport Pottery Artisan and Food Market
Friday 24 September - Saturday 25 September, 10:00 am - 4:00 pm both days
Free entry
If your children are interested in artisan food (yeah, it's a bit of stretch, but they may be), then Middleport pottery may be the place for you.  Try out new and interesting foods (it'll be a change from pizza, chicken nuggets and chips, which is all mine will eat...).

Alternatively, the foody theme continues with the Newcastle Under Lyme Fresh n Tasty Foodstival.
Saturday 25th September 2021
11:00 am - 6:00pm
Brampton Park, Newcastle under Lyme, Staffordshire ST5 0QP

This is a similar but less 'artisan' food festival, with a refreshing array of hot and cold (alcoholic and soft) drinks to appeal to everyone’s taste buds.   There'll be a wide selection of food and drinks stalls, with an exciting opportunity to try an array of tasty dishes and desserts, to cover everybody's taste preferences and appetites.

These are always good if your kids are nibblers and you're looking to try to expand their narrow range of foods (without having to break the bank buying food that then gets buried in the freezer for months).

COST:
Under 5 – FREE
5 – 15 years - £1.50
16+ £2.50

Potters 'Arf Marathon
Sunday 26 September

Yes, the Potters 'Arf marathon is back, starting out from central Hanley at 10:30 am, and going on a large anticlockwise loop around the city.  The route includes Shelton, Fenton, Longton, Bentilee, Abbey Hulton, Milton and Baddeley Green before returning to Hanley via Sneyd Green.

Come along, cheer the runners on, and maybe get some photos?

Expect traffic disruption around the route for most of the morning.

Here's an ongoing list of where, when and how much it costs to see fireworks displays in and around Stoke on Trent this year (after last year's damp squib!).  I'll keep adding to it as we get closer!

Spitfire Flypast, Stoke-on-Trent, Saturday 18 September

Cancel your plans for the weekend!

The Potteries Museum and Art Gallery have announced that there will be a Spitfire flypast by the RAF on Saturday 18 September at 12.38pm,  celebrating the opening of their new Spitfire Gallery, which opens to the public on Monday 20 September - I'm sure it'll be visible from outside, even if you can't go in!

Please be aware that timings could change at short notice and the flypast is weather dependent.

Find somewhere with a good view (Tesco car park, or any of the adjacent car parks near the museum) to get the best of the flypast.  In previous years, flypasts have involved a couple of bends and turns, so keep your eyes open!

Sunday 12 September 2021

Paint A Wooden Spitfire, Mitchell Arts Centre, September 2021

Stoke-on-Trent is celebrating Spitfire Weekend on 18-19 September, and there are various activities taking place.

The first I found is Paint A Spitfire, a children's activity taking place at the Mitchell Arts Centre, 40 Broad Street, ST1 4HG (behind the Tesco Extra in Hanley, which you can use for parking).  It's a free activity, running from 10:00 am - 2:00 pm, and is suitable for any child who'd like to paint a wooden model Spitfire.

No booking necessary; allow 30 minutes for your child to paint their model Spitfire.

Stoke Con Trent Comic Convention, October 2021

The biggest and best Comic Convention in Stoke-on-Trent; Staffordshire and possibly even the West Midlands and beyond:  Stoke Con Trent is back.  This year sees a change of venue, as the convention moves from Staffs Uni (where it's been held since its launch) and we are invited to #KeeleTheForce.

Since its launch, Stoke Con Trent has become a leading event, featuring a wide range of sci-fi actors (Garrett Wang, various Doctors, Jeremy Bulloch) and a range of TV celebrities (Stoke Con Trent has become the place to meet the team from ITV's Gladiators), as well as comic artists (local and national).

Stoke Con Trent genuinely has something for all ages.  They've had guests including Hacker T Dog (CBBC) and Tiny Tim (of YouTube fame, and well worth a look), and members of S Club 7 (who have since gone on to have TV careers of their own).  If they're still a little young for you, you can hope to see the Gladiators, and if they're still not your cup of tea, then there are often TV stars from shows like The Chase.  It's grown significantly since its start as a sci-fi/comic convention to attract a much wider audience base (which means they get the ticket revenue to attract the bigger stars, in a positive, virtuous circle).

The wide range of guests is complemented by a wide range of stalls.  Yes, there are Funko Pops, and Lego figures, but there are also local gaming groups, stores, sweets, refreshments and so on.  Which reminds me: the convention venues (they've been at Staffs Uni, and at King's Hall Stoke on one occasion) are always very well equipped, with hot/cold food, toilets (including disabled toilets) and ideal for this kind of event.

I've blogged before with extensive reviews and previews of earlier Stoke Con Trents, and this post is to remind everyone that it's back, on Sunday 10 October.  At the time of writing, guests are still being announced, and I anticipate frequent updates throughout September as we get closer to the date.

Guests announced so far include:

Robert Llewellyn (Kryten from Red Dwarf, Scrapheap Challenge)

Gladiators:  Lightning; Scorpio and Zodiac (and if that seems female-only, I strongly suspect that Wolf and Saracen will join the list at some point soon)

Sam Fox 1980s pin-up and pop star (yes, she had a top 30 UK single)

Hacker T Dog from CBBC returns for a second Con.

Jessica Stafford (The Real Hustle)

Ted Robbins (everything from Ackley Bridge to Peter Kay's shows)

Steve Cardenas (Red Power Ranger)

And there will certainly be plenty more.  The students from Staffordshire University's Comic and Comic Arts degree course regularly put on a great display of their artwork, which is also recommended if you're more interested in Comic Conventions, and in the past Lee Sullivan (whose work includes Transformers) has attended.

What really makes the conventions - the icing on the cake - is the number of people who attend in Cosplay.  Yes, the local Cosplay groups attend, and they're amazing, but many of the attendees also dress up, and there's a great atmosphere.  This is genuinely for all the family - I've seen the Incredibles Family, with Mrs Incredible pushing Jack-Jack (in costume) in his pushchair.  Hilarous!!

Tickets are reasonably priced for a convention of this scale and are available from the Stoke Con Trent website:

£40 for a family ticket (2 adults and 2 children)
£15 for adults (17 and over)
£10 for concessions (pensioners and those with a disability; carers' tickets are available)
£8 for children (5-16)
Under 5s are free

Great value, a great day out, and genuinely suitable for all ages.  I'll be reviewing the latest Con in an upcoming post, and sharing even more pictures!

Alsager Car Boot Sale, September 2021

Car boot sales are back!  The outdoor, wide-open-space format of car boot sales mean they were always going to be back on our calendars, and the first genuine car boot sale that I've found is at Alsager, on the weekend of 4-5 September.

Held by Alsager's Rotary Club, their car boot sale will be held instead of their normal charity market, which they have held a charity market outside the Alsager Civic for many years.  However, as the Covid-19 situation is still unclear, they've decided to switch to a car boot sale this year.  This will be Alsager Rotary's first fundraiser for over 18 months.

The car boot sale will take place on both Saturday and Sunday (4th and 5th September - 8am to 2pm) at Hall Farm, Crewe Road, Alsager, ST7 2UB.

Sunday 29 August 2021

Betley Motor Festival, September 2021

Betley Motor Festival is coming up on Saturday 11 September, and it looks like being a great event.  Firstly - it's local.  Everything I promote or review on this blog is meant to be local to Stoke-on-Trent and Newcastle-Under-Lyme (although sometimes I go further afield).

Secondly, Betley Motor Festival is a combination of a car show, with other family-friendly activities such as a funfair, trade stalls, food, birds of prey etc.  The range of activities means that this will be a complete family fun-day and car show all rolled into one, with something for everyone in the family.  There'll be inflatables (play area), a funfair, and plenty of opportunity to catch up with family and friends - especially the petrol-heads.

For more details and contact information, there's the Stallfinder page for this event, and the CarCalendar page which has even more details.  The events team are also running a Facebook page which is being updated with attractions all the time.

It's £3 for adults, and under-16s are free, and there's free parking.

Nostalgia Town and Country Fair, Norton, September 2021

The quiet village of Norton, on the eastern edge of Stoke on Trent, is a rural treasure that doesn't often feature on this blog (this really could be a first), but this September, the local Rotary Club are holding their 'Nostalgia Town and Country Fair' and it looks like it's going to be a real treat.  I've not seen this promoted on social media - I was fortunate with a Google search - and that's why I wanted to share more details here.

Leek Rotary Club are giving everybody a great chance to catch up on all the missed opportunities of the last 18 months, with vintage vehicles; a dog show; trade stands and charity stalls; floral arts and a plant fair; barbecue, bar and food, and the general atmosphere of a semi-rural summer show.

There are competitions and prizes for horticulture, floral arts, cakes, jams and so on - it's going to have a full-on village fete ambience.

Assuming the weather holds, this will have a wide range of interesting activities that should appeal to all the family.

It's at Heakley Hall Farm, Norton, Stoke on Trent, ST6 8PN on Sunday 5 September, 10:00-6:00.
£5 per person, under 12s are free.
Free parking.

Bradwell Lodge: Books, Comics and Collectables Fair, August 2021

The Books, Comics and Collectables Fair is like one of those rare items you find at a collectibles market - it's small, it's unique, not many people have heard of it, but it's an absolute gem for those who do find it.

It's held on the last Sunday of each month, at Bradwell Lodge, near Newcastle.  It's not huge, but it has refreshments and toilets on site, and the stalls are all vintage themed (and by vintage I mean good vintage, like retro toys and collectibles, not boring vintage, like bunting, antiques and horse brasses).  The stalls that I've seen have included...

Star Wars (Funko Pops, figures, books, Scalextric sets)
old maps (local and national), sheet maps that pre-date Ordnance Survey
vintage comics (Beano, Dandy and Eagle, among others)
a range of novels and paperbacks (Star Wars, Star Trek, Doctor Who, and other genuinely classic sci-fi)
retro figures including Transformers, along with Lego and other retro toys
DVDs and blu-rays (mostly sci-fi themed)

Admission is free, which is a genuine bonus, and so is parking.  All the stores are from local traders.  This is a regular event that gets a massive recommendation from me.  The stall-holders are friendly, they practise social distancing and they'll do you a deal if you buy in bulk.

The next event is Sunday 29 August and should be another great trip out!

Sunday 22 August 2021

Our Burslem: Burslem Festival, 30 August

Burslem town's bank holiday event is back!  There are only limited details of the activities that are planned for this August, but based on previous events, there should be a range of fairground rides (carousels, inflatable slides and a Twizzler), side-shows (hook a duck), a small set of stalls from local charities and organisations, and the local sports car club (Ikon Bodyz Car Club).  I strongly suspect the town cryer will be there too.

Thanks to volunteer organisation Our Burslem, the event will be taking place on Monday 30 August (another event for Bank Holiday Monday) and will more than likely take over most of Market Place (with that road being closed most of the way to the Home Bargains roundabout (Woodbank Street) or Westport Road.  This is a great opportunity to make the most of the end of the summer, with candy floss, ice cream, drinks and burgers (possibly) on sale.

In previous years, the event has been well supported by local charities, and it would be good this time to see some of the local shops opening for the day as well (instead, ironically, of shutting because it is a Bank Holiday).

Look out for it, beware of the road closure, and enjoy the end of the summer!

Burslem Town Centre (focused on Market Place)
Monday 30 August
Timings:  probably 11-4ish (I can't find a definite source).

Classic Cars and Steam, Apedale - August Bank Holiday!

The August Bank Holiday weekend events are starting to pile up, and three options to add to the list are Apedale Valley's Land Rover Show on 28 August, their Transport Show on Sunday 29 August, and their Classic Cars and Steam event, on Monday 30 August.  This isn't the first time I've reviewed or previewed Apedale Valley, as you'll see here.  As before, I would recommend visiting if you have any interest in cars or trains, or classic vehicles at all!  This is a great site, ideal for young families (although I don't remember it being particularly pushchair friendly... this was a while ago, though!).

Apedale Valley combines steam and diesel trains with a hangar full of museum pieces and exhibits from the area's history.  There are train rides at certain dates, and this will be one of them.  In addition, there will be classic cars on display - hard to say which, but there should be a good range, and based on recent visits to Apedale and to the Etruria Mill, you'll probably see cars from the 1940s-1980s (including everything from an Austin Metro to a Ford Capri).

The train rides on Sunday are from 11:00-4:00 and on Monday are from 11:30-4:00, and are charged at standard fares on both days.

The museum/hangar makes for very useful shelter if the weather isn't great, and there's also (if I remember rightly) a waiting room at the station while you're waiting for you turn on the train.  I do believe that they serve light refreshments, but don't quote me on that as it's been a while since we last visited.  It's a great site and I would expect to spend at least an hour looking at everything that's on offer.

Apedale Valley's website has more details.

Macc Pow! Comic Convention, September 2021

Not your typical comic convention (with stalls, merchandise, cosplay and so on), and more about comic art, MACC-POW! is Macclesfield’s day of comic-art, specifically celebrating comic artists, cartoonists and creators globally. It's based in Macclesfield's historic Town Hall building, and this year is a day of free drawing workshops.

It's smaller than it was pre-COVID, but will still be a good day, with opportunities to learn to draw comics like the professionals: Tor Freeman (The Phoenix); Charlie Adlard (The Walking Dead) and Marc Jackson.  Although these are scaled down from previous events, this is still recommended if you have any interest in drawing comics and cartoons.

Macclesfield might be on the northern edge of 'Stoke on Trent and surrounding area' but it's well worth a visit.  The town itself has a good range of shops, which are all reappearing after COVID and would appreciate some local support.

Saturday 4 September, 10:00 am - 3:00 pm.  Spaces are very limited to 12 per session, so book early, and only book if you are certain you can attend.

Find them on Facebook, or email: yowsa@markmakescomics.co.uk

Northwich Comic Convention, October 2021

It's back!  Comic Conventions generally are returning, and in particular Northwich Comic Con.  Northwich is one of the largest I've been to, since it takes over a whole gymnasium, plus surrounding corridors and entrance ways (and, if the weather is good, the car park too, with The A Team van, or KITT, or other vehicles).

These photos were taken at a previous Northwich Comic Con, where there was a wide range of Cosplay characters, including some guests who had even dressed up in Star Trek uniform (you don't see that every day).

This is massively recommended.  Previous Northwich Comic Cons have featured large numbers of stands, selling all the usual merchandise, in plentiful supply, and with a wide range of characters, themes, photo opportunities - it's well worth the admission price.  Ticket news is still pending, as the organisers work with the venue.

Weston Park Model Airshow, September 2021

As we return to normality, large-scale events are starting up (postponed, maybe, but going ahead nonetheless).  Football matches have crowds, and airshows have restarted!

The Weston Park Model Airshow is (despite the title) a large-scale event, which will include some full-size aircraft.  The Red Arrows aren't listed as going, but there should be a good range of other aircraft attending, along with model aircraft.  Model aircraft are amazing to watch, and if you haven't seen them before, I can strongly recommend seeing them.  They sound like the 'real thing', and have incredible manoeuvrability and agility in the air.  Providing the wind isn't too strong, they will be able to fly some amazing sequences which closely rival their full-size brothers.  Model jets in particular sound authentic - just like the full size versions - and the show may well include two model Red Arrows flying in formation (a sight to behold).

Weston Park has huge grounds, which will be filled with entertainment for the full family, including stalls, sideshows and a funfair (in accordance with Covid restrictions) and in the evening, the model flying continues and there's also a firework show.

The show runs from 3-5 September, including the evenings, and there's more information on the Weston Park website and the airshow website.

Weston Park is on the edge of Telford/Newport, and is not far from RAF Cosford (which I can also very highly recommend!).

Stormtroopers in Newcastle in August!

August Bank Holiday (Monday 30 August) will be the first unrestricted bank holiday we've had since the start of lockdown in 2020, and I'm pleased to report that the North Staffs Stormtroopers will be in Newcastle under Lyme meeting and greeting, and checking for Rebels.

Newcastle will be holding a Bank Holiday market (in the past, these have included large numbers of local organisations setting up stalls - the Scouts, the local Rotary Club, other local charities, and so on) so it will make for a great day out.  In addition, the North Staffs Stormtroopers have started swelling their ranks with Clone Troopers, Captain Jack Sparrow and DC characters (and possibly the Mandalorian).

The market event is Newcastle's Artisan Market (but expect a range of stalls, as I mentioned).

First Events of 2021

 Happy New Year!

The first upcoming events of 2021 are likely to be our vaccinations (here's hoping), but after that, what's next?

Maybe it will be the new Spitfire Gallery at the Potteries Museum and Art Gallery?  Pre-COVID, this was one of our favourite school-holiday destinations, and we'll be pleased to return to it when we're all jabbed up.

As places start to reopen, I'll be posting events and updates as frequently as possible!  Let's hope for a better 2021!
